The recent post Scaling PostGIS location data by Jim Mlodgenski really caught our eye. Postgres-XC is an Open source read-write scaleable fork of PostgreSQL. It's currently based on the PostgreSQL 9.1 release. It's a fork we mentioned in our last book, PostgreSQL: Up and Running as a fork to watch out for and one we hope to experiment with and talk about in our second edition of PostGIS in Action. In terms of competition it is really PostgreSQL answer to Oracle RAC.
Stay tuned for the Sequel to PostGIS in Action. We've signed the contract and started work on it. We'll be posting the preliminary table of contents too. Expect to see good amount of coverage of geometry, geography, raster, and topology as well as showcasing of new features in PostgreSQL 9.2 and 9.3. We are hoping to have this one done in a year or so, hopefully released around the time of PostgreSQL 9.3 and hopefully by the time PostGIS 2.1 is out and PostGIS 2.2 is in development.
